Scarab with the Name of Amenemhat III, Middle Kingdom, Dynasty 12, ca. 1859–1813 B.C., From Egypt; Possibly from Memphite Region, Dahshur, Glazed steatite, L. 1.6 cm (5/8 in), This scarab was made for a royal woman to wear in a ring or necklace. Its back, bearing the cartouche of Amenemhat III, shows an image of Bes flanked by two of the goddess. On the base is a scene of the pharaoh slaying a hippopotamus, one of the most dan-gerous animals in ancient Egypt's riverine environment
