School of Aphrodisias, Tondo with the bust of Apollo, property of the Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen, marble, chiseled, drilled, smoothed, marble, Total: Height: 63 cm; Width: 63 cm; Depth: 32 cm, sculptures, reliefs, architectural elements, ornamental objects, history of Apollo (Phoebus), Middle Empire, Roman antiquity, This tondo bust is said to have been found during excavation work in Minturno - situated between Rome and Naples. The round shield is broken away along the contour of the shoulders and the head. Along the lower edge the material was worked off. The head is missing a few forelocks. The young man can be identified as Apollo by the arrow quiver behind the left shoulder, the cloak (Greek chlamys) and the curly hair in analogy to other representations. The tondo belongs to a genre of monuments that was particularly widespread in the east of the Roman Empire. Such decorative pieces, known as 'imagines clipeatae' (images on shields), were placed in groups on public buildings, especially on market halls, according to a clearly defined program and usually depicted members of the ruling dynasty surrounded by deities, poets and philosophers. According to their style, this tondo most likely originated in southwestern Asia Minor, probably in Aphrodisias. This assumption is also supported by the nature of the material: coarse-grained, grey marble, as known from this region.
