On the front is an engraved representation of the famine during the Siege of Leiden, surmounted by a female figure sitting on a cloud, depicting the Rhetoric. Between the two images the year 1574 and a band with the phrase of the rhetorician's chamber: LYEFD'IS TFONDAMENT. Around an openwork edge with a cross with snake at the bottom, griffin heads at the top left and right and curly motifs in between. On the other side, the herring and white bread distribution on the Vliet after the Relief of Leiden is depicted, with the female figure Rhetorica at the top again. In between a blank band and the date 10.M 1574 3.D (October 3, 1574). On the bottom and sides of the blazon five eyes where alternately three gilded silver shields and two sawn-out letters, D and G. The shields are all decorated differently: cross with snake, reverse LEYDEN OV; city coat of arms of Leiden, reverse side of the lion rampant (Holland); and three bird's heads (jester's heads?), back of house brand with letters DG, 1979
