Soldier on guard covering the pan of his helm with two fingers against sparks (no. 42), c. 1600, A soldier on guard, full-length, to the right, holding a helm (a particular type of firearm) with his left hand (no. 42), c. 1600. On the cock (part of the ignition mechanism) of his helm is the burning fuse. With the index and middle fingers of his right hand, he covers the pan (the powder reservoir) of his helm to protect the powder from sparks from the fuse.
