Sphinx, Tuff, chiseled, Nenfro tuff, chiseled, Total: Height: 100.00 cm; Width: 85.00 cm; Depth: 33.00 cm, Sculptures, funerary monument, funeral furnishings, Sphinx, The 'Hamburg Sphinx' in the common Greek seating scheme is one of the best examples of archaic Etruscan sculpture preserved. The cylindrical lion's body of the mighty hybrid is shown in profile, while the human-shaped head looks at the observer frontally. The wings are curved upward in a sickle shape, the tail is curved around the right rear thigh. In some details, such as the formation of the mouth, the eyes and the hairstyle, Greek art has unmistakably left its mark. The porous stone of the squatting sphinx was originally covered with a thin layer of stucco painted in vivid colors. Sphinxes, lions, hippocamps and other animals stood in front of the entrances of Etruscan tombs to protect the site. Compared to earlier ideas a change has taken place: No longer a frightening and frightening demonic being is shown, but a benevolent guardian.
