The stadtholders are listed in chronological order on the steps of a grand staircase in a palace. At the top Willem I is murdered by Balthasar Gerards. Then Maurits, Frederik Hendrik, Willem II with Andries and Cornelis Bicker as representatives of Amsterdam, Willem III and Willem IV. After William IV, the guardians of William V follow: Anna and Lodewijk Ernst. Finally, at the bottom, William V, the last of the stadtholders, steps down from the stairs onto a stone marked Oranienstein, referring to Oranienstein Castle in Germany, where William left after recognizing the Batavian Republic as part of the provisions of the Peace of Amiens, on March 27. 1802.
