Along the top of the lid and along the bottom of the box is a decorative band engraved with leaves interspersed with four dots. The edge of the lid has a fine pearl edge. On top is an image engraved of the Steenschuur just after the powder disaster after a copper engraving by J.E. Mark from 1807. On the inside of the lid is engraved in writing letters: For faithful services in the fatal disaster, the City of Leijden happened on 12th January 1807.
