treasure find from Palaiokastron - earrings (Eros with, gold, garnet, mother-of-pearl, bent, brushed, pressed, folded (metalworking), hammered, chased, gold, garnet, pearl, total: height: 7.9 cm; width: 1.9 cm; Depth: 0.8 cm; Weight: 11.69 g, Body jewelry, History of Cupid, Cupid (Eros), musical instruments, Early Hellenistic, High Hellenistic, Greek antiquity, This earring undoubtedly formed with Inv. 1918.59 a pair. Both the measurements, the weight and the two related figures of little Eros indicate this. The gemstones set in gold are attached to a long bow. At the bottom, a pierced bead is set on each side, one of which is missing. Three chains reach down; on the two outer ones, pomegranate stones are attached, which have the form of pomegranate seeds. The middle chain is shorter and serves to hang a fully cast Eros. This beats rattles. The Eros wears the belly and shame releasing robe of the Attis figures. They are overlaid with meanings from the aphrodisiac-erotic theme and that of Attis, the Phrygian god of fertility and lover of the Kybele. Seen as a pair in their movement, the erotic ones with wide coats and open wings seem to be about to land near the wearer. Together with appliqués in the form of theater masks or nereids and maenads, the eardrobe was part of the find of Palaicastron in Thessaly, discovered and excavated in 1909.
