The Virgin with the Child., Cornelis van Dalen the Younger, engraver (printmaker), 1653-64, Netherlands, engraving, Cornelis van Dalen the Younger (1638-64) was, like his namesake father, an engraver from Amsterdam. The younger, short-lived Van Dalen produced reproductive engravings of very fine quality. This example, after a painting by Dutch Golden Age artist Govert (Govaert) Flinck (1615-60), a voluptuously baroque half-length Madonna of Humility, is no exception. The whereabouts of the original are unknown, showing the value of this often marginalised medium. Below the image, there is an inscription of appropriately devotional verse in Latin.
