Wine cooler (one of a pair), ca. 1735–36, Chinese with German (Augsburg) mounts, Hard-paste porcelain; silver, Height: 8 in. (20.3 cm); Diameter: 8 1/4 in. (21 cm), Metalwork-Silver In Combination, These wine coolers were produced in China for export to Europe. While the decoration is Chinese in origin, the form is western and is probably based on a silver example. The mounts by the Augsburg silversmith Elias Adam enhance the luxurious nature of the coolers and reflect the continuing appreciation for Chinese porcelain in the eighteenth century
