Winslow Homer, Marine, 1881, watercolor over graphite on off-white wove paper, 9 3/4 in. x 13 1/2 in. (24.77 cm x 34.29 cm), Created on a trip from New York to England in 1881, 'Marine' is one of two watercolors of the same vessel seen from opposite ends. The work acutely sharpens the viewer's perception of time. A sea-legged sailor balances on board a ship, as the vessel makes its way through the roiling waves. The subject tests the artist's sense of balance and challenges him to turn a momentous event into an image with staying power. Homer gave this watercolor to his younger brother Arthur, who placed it on the mantelpiece of his cottage at Prout's Neck and later sold it to the lawyer and local historian Augustus Moulton.
